Blog 28 – Saving Sharks with Sophi – “Sharks from Grandpa Larry”

Blog 28 – “Sharks From Grandpa Larry”My Grandpa Larry made me a super cool Birthday gift.  He gave me a walking stick (I left the stick at his house last time I was there).  He burned a hammerhead shark that looks like my drawing on it and Save Sharks With Sophi too.  He even put an agate in the top of it – him and I collect rocks.

He said that I can use it when I go to give talks about saving sharks.

Then, for Christmas, he made me a sign for my office that I have under my bed.

It says Sophi’s Office and it’s a hammerhead and his teeth are all agates.  He is really good at drawing and crafts!  Thanks Grandpa Larry.

Blog 27 – Saving Sharks with Sophi – “RREA Speech”

Blog 27 – Saving Sharks with Sophi – “RREA Speech”

I gave a speech to the Retired Richfield Educators Association (RREA) at their Christmas party.

After I told them all about what I was doing to help sharks, they had A LOT of questions for me.

I brought lots of pictures and “Sharkie” and “Emma” to show them.  They even paid me with a $50 donation.

It was fun and I did such a good job that my Mom gave me a Great White Shark.

We saw some of the teachers drive by my house to see my big Snow Hammerhead and they might come to my Hot Cocoa stand.

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 25 – “School Spirit Week”

It was school spirit week at my school – every day we had to dress different.

The first day we had to dress like our favorite team.  Lots of my friends dressed like the MN Vikings and the MN twins sports teams.  However, I decided to dress like the University of Miami Shark Research Team!

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 23 – “Tagging a Snow White Hammerhead

Blog 23 – “Tagging a Snow White Hammerhead”

Me and my Dad made a snow hammerhead on my deck.

My Dad surprised me by just making the shape with a shovel.

Then he told me to come over and try to figure out what he was making.  Once I saw the shape of it, I knew what it was right away!

I put the eyes (green tomatoes) on and then I helped make the dorsal fin and finished all of the other fins.  Then we shoveled all of the snow away from it so it looked like it was swimming in water.

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 21 – A day with RJD

Blog 21  A Day With RJD

I got to out with the RJD team again today (Oct. 9th).  I was so excited to see what we would catch.  I brought some of my shark cookies with to share too.  I thought they would really like them!

Sophi with some of the RJD team (Click to Enlarge)

When we were driving out to our spot, I got to sit up with the driver and use the binoculars too.  I was trying to look for some sharks in the water.

Sophi with Binoculars (Enlarge Image)

We got 4 sharks that day – 2 blacktip, 1 blacknose and a big lemon.  I am trying to see how many different species that I can touch.  I think that I am up to 7 so far – there are like 500 kinds.

I can’t wait to go out again, but I have to go back to MN tomorrow.  My Mom said that when I get home I am going to be in the newspaper – I think that will be cool!

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 20 – “Tagging My Shark”

Blog 20 Tagging my Shark

I went out on the ocean today to tag my shark “Captain Curt”.  I was very excited when I left the dock on Captain Curt’s boat.  My uncle, Captain Curt, was super excited too!  My Auntie Kelli, my Dad, my friend Chad, Dr. Neil and the Fox National News came with me.  I am going to be on TV again with Fox – in all of the states this time.  We got 5 sharks today.  One was my 7 foot Bull shark – I named him “Captain Curt” because my Uncle showed me sharks and the ocean.  It was awesome!!

Sophi with the Satellite tag she raised money for! (Click to Enlarge)

“Capt. Curt” the Bull Shark (Click to Enlarge)

I learned all about the black dots on a shark’s nose. (ampullae of lorenzini)  They are the shark’s electric sense.  The shark can feel prey for like a mile away or something.  They think, “oh, there’s something good to eat around here,” and they go eat it!

After “Captain Curt” was tagged, we put him back into the water and he pushed Dr. Neil right off the boat!  He was ok though, just wet.  Once “Captain Curt” swam away, we did the Bull Shark dance.

Sophi and Dr. Neil doing the Bull Shark Dance while being filmed by the film crew “Click to Enlarge”

“Captain Curt” already came to the surface, so now I can follow him on my computer in MN. I can’t wait to show my friends.  Now I am going to save up for another shark tag – my Mom says I am over a ¼ of the way there.  I don’t know what kind of shark I will get next?!
