Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 19 – Dinner with Jim Abernethy

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 19 – Dinner with Jim Abernethy

I got to have dinner with my new shark friend Jim in Florida when I was there.  He brought me a book, from my Grandma too, that he wrote.  He took all of the pictures of sharks in it too.  He even wrote me a note in the book.  It is the best shark book I have!  He also gave me Emma.  She is a tiger shark that is friends with Jim – Her picture is in my new book a bunch.  I found out that Jim’s favorite kind of shark is the Tiger shark.  My favorite is the Great Hammerhead.

My pen pal Dr. Neil was at dinner too.  So was Caroline (Dr. Neil’s wife), my Dad, my Auntie Kelli, and Rose – she helps me with my donations.  Jim told me that he nominated me for an award.  It is called, Youth Ambassador to the Planet with the Wyland foundation.  My mom is going to take me to our zoo to see one of Wyland’s walls…  I am very excited!

My friend Chelsea, she’s twelve, gave me a donation.

She made jewelry and sold it to help me with the sharks!

I thought that was so awesome and I’m glad she is my friend!

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 17 – “Big News”

Blog 17 – Big News!!!

My teacher from last year, Mrs. Thompson, sent the story about me saving the sharks to Fox 9 news and they interviewed me right at my house!

Sophi and Mrs. Thompson (Click to Enlarge)

I had to wear a microphone on my shirt and talk with Tom Halden and the cameraman Russ.  They asked me a bunch of questions at my Lemonade and cookie stand about sharks.  Then, they came to my office in my room to see all of my shark stuff.

It was so cool to see me on TV – Lots of people called and emailed to tell me they saw me and that I did a good job – I feel kind of famous.

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 16 “Attention Captain Curt”

Blog 16 ATTENTION CAPTAIN CURT!!

I decided to call my shark Captain Curt.  I am naming it for my Uncle Curt because I love him so much and I love what he does.  He was the first person to introduce me to sharks and the ocean.]

Captain Curt has been helping me so much to learn more about sharks and the ocean.  I am glad that he is teaching me because it’s fun to learn about the ocean and sharks and the more he teaches me the more interesting it gets.

I can’t wait to tag “Captain Curt the shark” with my uncle and I’ve been wondering what kind of shark it will be?

Blog 15 – I Did It!!

I got all $2000.00!!!  I feel really glad and I am going to keep going to $4000.00 for a new goal.  My map has 30 states colored and I even got donations from 5 other countries (Canada, Bahamas, Chile, Bosnia, Australia) – I don’t have a map for those.

Updated Map – colored in states represent where donation have been recieved (Click to Enlarge)

Now I can get my shark tag and name my shark.  I even found out that I get to go to Florida and go with on the boat to tag my shark.  I am so EXCITED!!!  I go in October and I have to miss 3 days of school even.

We celebrated my goal at my house.  My Mom and Dad surprised me with my favorite Oreo Pie.  They said they were proud of me.  There was even sharks on the pie that I could keep to play with.

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 14 “Urban Wildland Race”

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 14 “Urban Wildland Race”

Sophi Volunteers for the Urban Wildland Race (Click to Enlarge)

I got to be a volunteer at a ½ Marathon race.  My school had a water stop at 3 miles and my whole family helped.  We had to go super early in the morning and we got t-shirts.  It was a “green” race and it helps my school go to the Woodlake nature center and learn about animals, seasons, life cycles and other stuff.  I handed out water when the runners went by and I even knew some of the runners.

The numbers that they had on their shirts could be planted and they would grow flowers.  You can learn more about the race if you watch this video and I am in it (2:40) and my principal got interviewed too.  It was really fun!

Check out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6m2ztzqEbxI

At the end of the race we cleaned all of the cups ups – they were all around the trail.  Then I went and watched some of the race because it crossed the streets so we couldn’t get back to our house right away.

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 13 – Meeting in the Bahamas

Blog 13 – Meeting in the Bahamas

Sophi and Auntie Kelli going to the meeting (Click to Enlarge)

I got to go on a trip to the Bahamas for 10 days.  When I was there I told about shark research at a meeting with my Auntie Kelli and LOTS of people.  I got to ride on a golf cart to the meeting even.  I had my flyers and my map and I wore my shark shirt and shark shoes – I let my Auntie wear my shark visor too!  I answered all of the questions the people had and then I sat at a table and they gave me donations and told me where they were from.  Now, I have money from 28 states, even Hawaii and Texas, and even 3 more countries (Bosnia, Chile and Australia).

I saw lots of different sharks and marine life in the Bahamas too.  When my Dad and I went to a pottery class, where I made a dolphin plate (they didn’t have shark plates), I even saw a baby Hammerhead!

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 12 – “Dolphin Swim”

Blog 12 Dolphin Swim

I went on a trip with my family to Atlantis in the Bahamas and we got to swim with a Dolphin.  I really liked it!  I found out that when people pay to swim with the Dolphins then some of the money goes to helping the ocean.  I thought that was nice.  This is my favorite picture of me with our Dolphin named Tracy – she was even pregnant.

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 11 – “All 50 States”

Sophi’s Map of the USA, Coloring in States that have Supported Her Efforts  (Click to Enlarge)

I have a plan to get donations from all of states in the USA (my home country).  I have money from 7 so far.  But if I even get $1 from a state I can color it.  Then, if I fill up the map, all of the states will know about shark research and that would be really good!  So, I think that if you know someone in another state – you could tell them about me and send them my flyer please.  Thanks, Sophi

I went to the eye doctor and I was hoping I had to get new glasses and I did.  I found the best ones!  They are sort of like a tiger (shark) – I love them.  So then, I made this drawing of a Tiger Shark wearing glasses!
