Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 9 – Farmers Market

“Farmers Market”

I was trying to think of other ways I could help Earth and so my family is going to shop at the Farmers Market for a lot of our food.

We have 2 Farmers Markets by our house and I can even ride my bike to one of them.  It is good to shop there because the food tastes better and it makes jobs for people that live by me.

I like when my mom gives me the money to buy the stuff.  I like the popcorn and the green beans the best.  I really like the park by the Farmers Market too!

My mom said that I made half the money that I am trying to raise for shark research… so that’s really good and I made this shark celebrating on my Lightbright.

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 7 – World Ocean’s Day!!

Blue Marbles for World Oceans Day (Click to Enlarge)

My mom read me a story about these blue marbles that people are passing around when someone does something good for water so I got some marbles to pass around for World Ocean Day (June 8).

I gave my class and all my friends and some teachers at my school 2 marbles and some water tips that I wrote.  Then, they could have one for keeping and give the other one away.

My water tips are:

  1. Don’t Waste Water.  Turn off the water when you brush your teeth or do the dishes.
  2. Don’t Litter.  The garbage goes into the sewer and then into the rivers, lakes and oceans.
  3. Use Cold Water.  It takes less energy.

I found some World Ocean Day stuff on the computer and it said the question to ask this year was, What is your favorite ocean animal?… mine is the shark!

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 6 – Happy World Environmental Day!!

Happy World Environment Day (June 5)!  I thought of the best thing to do – Me and my family went for a walk and picked up all of the garbage on my street.  My Dad made cool garbage sticks for me and my sister.

I got all of these shark books at the library and I learned that Tiger sharks are like the garbage man in the ocean.  They eat shoes, animal bones, even license plates … to bad I couldn’t bring one with me on my walk!

My favorite way to celebrate stuff is to go to Bakers Square for Oreo pie and my Mom even took me there for this day!  The pie was super good!!

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 5 – “Go Green!!”

GO GREEN!  My mom was driving me to school today and I saw some people planting some flowers and trees.  I waved and yelled GO GREEN out the window to tell them what a good job they are doing.  My mom said it’s World Environment Day on Saturday (June 5th), so I am trying to think of something good to do for the Earth that day.  I like to celebrate things at Bakers’ Square with Oreo pie, so I might do that.

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 4 – Lemonade Stand for Sharks

I am getting some of my money for helping sharks by having Lemonade/Shark Cookie Stands.  Me, my Mom and sister made 123 cookies.  My Grandma made the frosting and I picked star sprinkles for the eyes.  I named the cookies “starry-eyed grey fins”.  The cookies are really good and lots of people want them.  My teacher bought 4 and my mom’s friend bought 50 to go to Illinois for her family reunion.  I am going to sell some at my Aunt’s office and bring some to my Uncle Curt’s Grandma GM when school is done.

We made some cool signs and sharks for the trees and put out balloons – my mom said the store gave them to us for free for my event.  My mom put my hammerhead shark drawing on a shirt for me to wear at my stand.  I had my stand in the front yard.  My Uncle Curt ordered 120 cookies over the phone too… we have to make more for him because I sold all of them.  I gave my sister a free cookie and lemonade to help me at my stand.  It was a success, a lot of my family, my neighbors and some of my friends came.  A policeman even came to buy a cookie and some lemonade.  There was a thunderstorm in the middle of it.  I made $141.25 for sharks.

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 3

After my research trip I decided to help sharks and the ocean.  My mom helped me make a flyer and I gave it to everyone I could think of.  I thought of 5 good reasons to help:

  • Some kinds of sharks are threatened of becoming endangered.
  • We need to stop people from making shark fin soup.
  • Sharks are important to our Earth.
  • We need to stop people from putting garbage in our oceans.
  • We need to stop over-fishing of sharks and work with fisherman to save sharks.

If I get $2000 I can buy a shark tag to help the research… Then, I can see where it swims on the map on the computer.  I want to help so that when I am bigger there are still sharks and oceans because I want to be a marine biologist and an art teacher.

Saving Sharks with Sophi – Blog 2 – Discovering the Oceans & Shark Research

I went on my first adventure to the ocean when I was 4.  I went on my Uncle Curt’s boat and caught my very own fish.  Then, my Uncle Curt caught a shark!  When I saw it, I started to fall in love with sharks.

Sophi – 4 years old with first fish (Click to Enlarge)

I thought the ocean was beautiful – you would look out at this amazing place and see a whole world to explore.

I started to study sharks for a long time then and I got surprised with a research trip from my Uncle Curt, Auntie Kelli and Dr. Hammerschlag in April.  It was the best day of my life!  I met a hammerhead which was my dream.  I met other kinds of sharks too.

I took lots of notes on the boat.  I learned that the lemon shark goes to lay their babies at the same spot every time.  The baby sharks come out of their mother’s tummy tail first.  I learned that there is a dance called the hammerhead.  I made up a bull shark and lemon shark dance too!
